Default Engine Replacement 65 FB

Hi,

First post here, just found this forum. Looks like a lot of good advice.

I have a 65 K Code FB that has the original engine. As far as I can tell the engine has never been out of the car. I've restored the car to a good no 2 driver, not concourse. Engine has about 83K original miles and is now starting to get a bit tired.

So, I feel it's time to do something. I figure it is just as good to pull the original engine and park it in a corner and replace it with a new crate engine or long block. Top candidates are 331 or 347 stroker, or a 351W. Just looking for roughly 400HP/400 ft lbs torque, maybe a little less. The 351W seems to be a good option for increased torque for a little less money than the strokers.

Car has a top loader f 4 speed, 9 inch rear end, 4.11 gears, McCleod clutch. Would like to be able to still use the existing exhaust setup (Dougs Ceramic coated Tri Y's with custom 2.5" exhaust). Also, will not do any engine compartment mods or cuts.

So, what are the different experiences out there? Recommendations?

Thanks

Mike

By all means, do hold on to the original powertrain, given that it is such a rare car.

I saw a 65 Fastback at Street Machine nationals a couple of years ago that was a full-blown custom - interior, body kit, suspension - all well done. But when I looked at the VIN I was sick - it was a K-code fastback. The guy's wife said he blew up the original engine in high school so I guess it wasn't that bad but it still seemed almost sacrilegious.

351W would probably be cheapest, but might be harder to fit given the higher deck height, and your exhaust might not work (headers). You might consider a T5 swap with those gears, while you're at it.

Just my 2c worth. That is such a beautiful car.

By all means, KEEP all the original stuff. I have all the original complete running engine, 4 speed trans, rally pak, radio, everything. Makes a better deal if you ever get rid of it. I don't plan on ever getting rid of mine but you never know. Beautiful baby you have there!!!

As stated wrap it up and store it somewhere safe. Do not get rid of it haha. If it were me (just my opinion) i would get a 331 or 347 stroker like you suggested and keep the toploader. If it is going to be a daily driver then i guess a T5 swap would be a good idea. It all depends on your budget and goals.

Defintely will keep the original engine! I've kept all original parts I've pulled off. I figure that it would cost as much or more to rebuild that engine as getting a crate replacement. With so few unmolested K engines out there, I think it's best to leave it as is for now.

What I'm wondering about is along what ozarks06 said about possible fit issues with a 351W. Seems to be the cheapest option over a stroker, but not if I have to do mods or replace things. This isn't a daily driver at all so a transmission swap is for later. If I keep the top loader, I'll probably swap out the 4.11's for 3.55's or so with a locker. McCleod is supposed to be working on a direct swap 5 spd overdrive replacement for the 4 speed top loader which would be perfect.

So, any advice on fit issues, height, width, motor mounts, etc for the 351W or others would be of great help. Specs to shoot for? Any recommended engine sources?

The only thing I have an issue with is getting to the plugs, header bolts. Other than that, everything is straight in.

That car is awesome! I would recommend a modified 302 (331, 347) since you will be keeping the original trans in it. Oh and welcome to the site!

Put the orginal in the corner and do what I did. I hid a 347 under all the stock trim and nobody knew the diff. I also put ele cut-outs for when I wanted to make a differance.

Thanks 69FB. It's starting to look like a 331/347 might be easier in the long run. I keep seeing mention of possible fitment issues with current exhaust, hood clearance. It seemed that the 351W was going to be more affordable though.

kc95: What do you mean by ele cut-outs? Do you mean exhaust cut outs/by pass? Did you run into any issues with installation? Anything to keep in mind for a 331/347? Looking at online prices for the strokers I'm looking at anywhere from $6500 to $9K for an engine. Anyone know of any good deals from reputable builders?

Thanks,

Mike
