Best single plane manifold??

Default Best single plane manifold??

Ive built a 331 stroker with all the bells and whistles and would like to put a single plane manifold on which is streetable and still lets me hit the high RPM's if needed. any knowledge from others will be great.

Why do you want a single plane? Use which ever intake works the best for what you want and the setup you have, which may or may not be a single plane. What's the wngine setup and what trans/gearing and what carb do you have?

tell us the specs of your engine, heads, cam, trans,gears carb size and usage and what car. That will determine which intake is best, just bolting a vic jr on the wrong combo might turn high rpm's but be a snail everywhere else.

331 stroker--edlebrock aluminum rpm heads--Claysmith custom grind solid lifter cam-(specs-lift 560--Duration at .050-258----108 lobe center. WC tremic 5spd .355 rear gears. 600cfm carb(for now) Ford Power Train 1 5/8 inch try-y headers. will use the car for a day off driver.

thats a big azz cam , a vic jr will make most top end power but an edelbrock air gap rpm would be the best choice for streetability, low end and mid you will still see xlnt top end, 600 carb? vac secs? you would be best off with a mighty demon annular 575 carb.

i am afraid you will have a stumble when you try to get on it from a low rpm with the single plane.

It's gonna be a mismatched combo. That cam is too big for those heads, or those heads are too small for that cam...whichever way you want to look at it. A single plane will make the most top end, but it's gonna be missing a bunch of power because those heads won't breathe much on a 331 past 6,000 rpm, but even with a dual plane that cam is not going to help with low/mid rpm power.

And the headers aren't really designed for much power over 6,000rpm either. It just has way too much cam.

+1 on the combo mismatch. With that much duration and lift, that cam is not a street friendly choice and those heads should probably be 180-190 to match up with it. Even still, it is not going to like sub 3000rpm.

The Edelbrock Air Gap intake is a bad ars dual plane intake that can play with the staple single planes. You can have an Air Gap "tuned" to flow 300-320cfm or just run it out of the box at 225cfm. A tuned Air Gap will out flow most any single plane intake out of the box and dang near flow as much after being worked. Vic Jr. intakes flow about 250cfm out of the box and Super Vic intakes flow between 275 and 300cfm. Your heads on the other hand only flow 250cfm at .600" lift. So...a stock Air Gap will have no trouble feeding those heads.

i appreciate the advice, but i disagree with the too much cam thought.


the Guy that owns the machine shop building my Stroker has 25 yrs of building engines and actually had almost the exact engine combo as mine in a 85 mustang in his shop.
we went for a ride before i dicided on the exact engine i wanted built and it was a tremendous running and sounding engine which i would be extremely happy with.
i do have a few things that will need to be tinkered with(Manifold-maybe carb) but the cam and heads i dont think so.

you should ask the person who designed the cam and or engine what would be best for you combo (they did design the cam for your build i assume)
