Default Free 68 = 460 project

Hey guys its been a while. Life moves fast. Anyway, I have the chance to get a 68 mustang from my uncle for free because he just lets it sit (Jesus probably six years now). So this gives me the incentive to build a 460 for it and stuff it in there. I already have a 68 built mostly original, so I don't mind cutting this one up. I hear that the 68 does not require cutting in the engine compartment, but give me your insights. I know all that has to be done otherwise, as I will put money into the 460 (have one sitting for a future project like this lol), C6, frame connectors, 9" rear, etc. Let me know what you all think and what any surprises could come my way. Also, what do you think about spring relocation to accomodate bigger meats out back? Is it worth the trouble? Or rather how big can I go without doing this? Thanks.

Why are you hellbent on a 460? It's a torque monster but it wouldn't fall out of a tree. Is it just for the sake of telling people you have a 460?

Build yourself a nice 390 car with 428 heads, or even a small block stroker. 460 is a great motor... for a Boat or a F250.

if your going to big block it anyways i say go for it with the 460, since you already have the engine. good tip for the pistons though would be over bore the block .015 and have the ring grooves cut to chevy size widths and order moly rings in .030 over 454 size. when i was looking there wasnt anyone making the moly rings in the ford sizes. how much power are you looking for from the engine? not much need to spend a ton on aftermarket internals the stock crank and rods are pretty sturdy, though if you have a late model block the pistons are really dished

I have no problem with a 390, 428 or any fe for that matter. I have the 460, the car, and turns out the car already has a 9" rear with traction bars. I am working with what I got. I went to see the car today and if I can get it to run with its 289 and all I will drive it home FOR FREE. Pretty stoked. Not too much rust. Its a typical old resto aka one that sat after being restored.

Thanks for the tip on the pistons. I'll look into it for sure. I'm looking to get 650 crank hp and I hear that it is quite easily attainable with p-51 kaase heads. They dynoed a set on a stock 460 (new bottom end parts of course and slight overbore, but otherwise stock) and got 690 or so hp.

Crites restoration also has everything I need for the swap or so it seems. I will have to find time for it all. I figure having everything is good enough for "working on it on my free time."

A good useable fe block is getting pricey to find the 385 was used up tell 96 and are everywhere.Yes the 460 will fit you will need the motor mounts the headers change the trans and matching cross member for it.You will need a bigger radiator big block front springs a 9 inch rear end and the engine cross member might have to be removed or modded depending which oil pan is used. The p51 heads are nice they are the scj heads but bigger ports and better flowing.

perfect thread. thanks, now I can ballpark price figures for the engine build.

One more thing, would you know how big I could go wheel wise in the stock tubs. I've been searching these forums and haven't gotten anything conclusive. I'll keep cecking, or rather do some calculations when I actually bring the car home.
