Default 1968 coupe project car

Hello to all. Just a little background, I have a 68 stang coupe, with the 200CU Straight 6. I recently decided that i am going to make it a project car and go all custom. I am planning on upgrading the engine to either a 289 or 302. besides the tranny, and engine mounts, what else should i be looking for to change (i.e. suspension, differentials, etc?) I read somewhere that the 6 cylinder mustangs used a 4 lug on the wheels and when Ford added the V-8 they went to a 5 lug system, should this be something as well i should plan on doing? any info or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you will have to upgrade the front end, so while you're at it, you might as well go disc brake too. Do you have a V8 donor car, or you going bone yard picking, or brand new stuff???

most likely boneyarding it. these size blocks are fairly easy to find. As for disk brakes, that is in store as well. Do you happen to have any links or contacts that might be useful. i have had a few that i have looked at, but more the merrier. thanks!

OK, you are going to HAVE to change the spindles and brakes. Even if you don't go disc right now, you need the bigger brakes to fit the spindles. The coil springs will be OK, as long as you rebuild the suspension. The only thing, which is sometimes good, is it will sit lower in the front. Also, make sure you take the bellhousing with the engine, you will need that too. Should bolt up to a C4 with no problems. Now, you want to go with an 8" rear, and go with some 350/355 rear gears. If you get the spindes and brakes from the boneyard, check the spindles for wear and a "bluing" of the metal. If it is either, pass, they will break eventually. NPD is a good source, as well as Mustangs Plus, and mustangs unlimited are 3 that I can think of, go with NPD first.

Go to this link--> Where to find mustang parts

Click on some of the sites there and order some catalogs. Many are free and have helpful tech articles either in them or on the site. I would also suggest shop manuals.

If you are not subscribed to Mustang Monthly, do it today.

PS(The tech article of the month in MM is replacing inner fender aprons; Those of you who know me have seen the pics of under my battery) WOOHOO!!
