Default Problem Starting

My car cranks fine when "cold", but once it's been running, and I turn it off, it won't crank...but if i let it cool, it will eventually crank. What causes this, and would i high torque starter remedy it? I dont know how old the starter is, but everything else is new,,,, battery, alternator, solenoid, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Do you have headers. Could be your starter close to touching the headers you could always get a heat shield for your starter or get a high torque mini starter like you said which is actually much easier to install and take out.

Sounds like the starter is getting heat soaked. Too hot it doesn't work, cools down works fine. As for the fix maybe someone else will chime in.

yes... have headers (and you're right, not much clearance). Thanks for the info. Much appreciated....

Ok. Need more help on this... I ordered a high torque starter. Figured while I was in the buying mood, I'd get the turn signal switch that needed replacing too. So, this morning I got the switch done without issue. Figured I was on my way to a great day.. BUT the starter that arrived is not the same as the one i removed. The problem is this: the new starter's distance from the bolting surface to the end of the bendix travel is 3/4". The starter I removed is 1-1/2" . What gives? did they send the wrong starter? I sure hope so... No way "to make this work" Anybody have input?

The car has a 289 with a toploader. Not sure exactly what brand the starter is. Apparently the starter is a 3/8 setback, and I need the 3/4? I'm sure the parts guy will know what I need, now that I have the old starter out. (I shoulda removed the bad starter first to avoid the issue, but I rolled the dice....and lost).
