Just remove the plug from cy #1 and stick your finger in the hole. When your approching 0deg on the balancer and its pushing air out (past your finger) you know your on the right stroke for base timing.

There was no need to remove the vacuum advance. None whatsoever.

•Remove distributor cap.
•Remove point screws.
•Remove condenser screw.
•Disconnect lead wire from coil.
•Remove lead wire, points, and condenser as one piece.

•Install Pertronix module, with screws not too tight.
•Install sensor ring on distributor shaft.
•Set gap between ring and module with included tool.
•Thread wiring through distributor housing and connect to coil.
•Install distributor cap.

•Drive car.

Dunno why you tried to remove the vacuum advance.
Because the arm for the advance is attached to the base plate.......the arm must be moved out of the way to get the old plate out and the new one in...........................

hi 2+2 .. I have a feeling he changed to a new distributor (not only module). as otherwise I wouldn't know why he pulled the distributor in the first place

If you have the distributor pointed the right way and you just need to align the oil pump shaft for it to drop the last 1/4", have a friend push down on the distributor with ONE finger, while you bump the starter, 99 out of 100 times it will fall right in.

i usually just turn the shaft with a long 5/16 or 3/8 (dependiong on engine) socket taped to an extension

I pulled the distributor because the screw for the vacuum advance broke off inside the housing. I tried using an easyout but it would not remove the broken screw......I had to remove the distributor to get it apart......and ended up breaking the distributor housing, which meant I had to buy a new distributor.........THAT is how I got to where I am now.

Thanks for the advice on the long socket to turn the oil pump shaft.......THAT is the kind of info I need.

make sure to tape it to the extension so the socket cannot fall. it should be 5/16" for your car.

as for setting the distributor correctly see my earlier post
