Default starter motor issues

I have a 67 that i got as a partial project. I have put 6 starter motors and 2 flywheels in it and I am still having problems with the teeth grinding off the starters within a week or two. The engine supposably is a 302 with a hydraulic cam it was rebuilt but neverstarted when I got it, the engine is meant to be a mid 80's vintage and it is connected to a c4 transmission. It has the 157 tooth flywheel. It seems like the starter is too far away from the flywheel and isnt engaging fully. I have tryed several different starters. Im onto a #3180 off a 1990 mustang with a 302. Is it that the engine may have too much compression for a stock starter do I need to get a high end starter or what. I am at a loss....
