Can measure total toe to check if still in spec from last alignment very easy w/ 2x4 toe tool.
When modifying front end components of properly aligned car, you can turn right and left tie rods equal amounts if you want to use only total toe measurement.
If total toe is out or doing a fresh alignment you can add a middle tab to 2x4 toe tool. Position middle tab under center line string. Can place permanent center line marks on pumpkin and belly bar for future alignments.
If your car has not had a proper alignment you can check interaction of all 4 wheels by plumb bobbing front and rear of all 4 tires to level floor and make 8 marks on floor. Move car and start connecting the dots and making measurements.
Any other ideas?

nba1341: that's the way I set mine. measured front and back. I am still not sure why people use a turntable?!
BUT yes, fully agreed. I was wondering the same thing. how can you be sure if you have a toe of 1/8" that it's actually both wheels toed in bu 1/16". how can you make sure steering box is centered. I have no answers to all that either
