Default carpet

had a question next weekend i will be putting carpet in wifes 65 mustang this is the first time doing this so need a few questions answered

1. i see in the old carpet kit in the front onb the side of the rockers has been cut in a small strip for the side of the rockers is this correct or did the last person chop up the carpet ?

2. where the headlight dimmer switch is how big of a hole do i need to cut ? old one is cut too big and the rubber grommit dont cover it which i know is too big but how big should it be?

3. do i have to cut out for the stick shift hole bigger carpet kit from cj pony's looks like it has a decent hole, wifes car has a t5 trans in it and not a c4 nor a 3 or 4 speed but have been told trans mounts in original hole in tunnel? which i dont know cuz old carpet is still in, and also should i go to the extent of sticking a new rubber cover boot for the stick shift, i have the humphugger console that would cover it no matter what

4. i hear people say make sure to measure and cut only once, what needs to be cut, i know the obvious for like seat belts ect but what else, im novice at this lol

im just trying to get answers before i install carpet, i know it needs to be around 70-80 degrees to install carpet to make it more plyable and easier to install give me any pointers or hints as i want this to be a 1 time carpet install kit

Whats the big deal with posting links to other forums. Its sharing helpful information. Thats what forums are for. I see people do it all the time and have done it a few times myself.

You will probably need to trim the hole for the shifter a little.

I'm not sure what size the hole for the dimmer switch is supposed to be. Just make it big enough for the switch to come through.

As far as what needs to be cut, it varies from car to car. Sometimes you will need to trim the carpet at the door sills and kick panels etc.

I would definitely wait for a day when its at least 80 degrees, that will make things easier.

Yes, you need to remove the rear quarter panel trim panels and the rear seat.

You should be able to do it in a day. It shouldn't take more than a few hours or the better part of an afternoon.

I just replaced the carpet in mine. You should take the kick panels, quarter panels, rear seats and sill plates off and out. Let the carpet sit in the sun for a while and then start with the rear first.

I use a propane torch to heat a knife to make my cuts. I used a 3/4 copper pipe heated to make the holes for seatbelt bolts and seat rail holes.

When you start the front section you will see a cutout in the underlayment underneath for the shifter. Start with an small X cut first, enough to get the shifter through and then make a larger cut for the shifter once you get the carpet in place. Take your time trimming the carpet near the sill and kick panels. It's better to have extra and cut more than be way too short on one cut.

You might consider removing the shifter. It's just a few extra bolts up top and one clip underneath to disconnect from the linkage (assuming it's an automatic). It makes cutting the right size hole for the shifter bezel much easier.

Regretfully, I didn't take mine out. I made a small x-cut in the center of the glued on jute underlayment cut out for the shifter. It turned out the the underlayment was glued on off center. I didn't figure that out until I had already cut the hole a little bigger. While moving it around trying to get the final fit, I had a small gap that showed after installing the shifter bezel. I trimmed a small patch piece from the sill area so that it isn't noticeable when the bezel is bolted down. The funny thing is I had the shifter out to replace the bushings the day before.
