Default Transmission Upgrade?

I've got a 1973 with a stock 302 that is gradually being upgraded for better performance. It has a stock 3 speed automatic that has begun slipping and will need to be changed pretty soon. This is a daily driver and I don't plan on racing it or building the engine up too much more than about 300hp. I am thinking of upgrading to a 4 speed automatic and was wondering if anyone has some suggestions without too many mods. Ultimate goal is a little better gas mileage and smoother cruising (less rpm's). Are there any good tranny's that can just be bolted on?

I've read a lot of the suggested sites but still can't find a solid answer. Before moving more into changing this transmission, maybe someone has an answer to my problem and I can keep the C4.

When the car is put in Drive after 10+ hours of sitting, it takes about 30 seconds before it catches in Drive. With Reverse, it goes in instantly. Once it "catches", all shifting works perfectly and does great for the remainder of the day. The fluid has been checked many times and is right at the correct level. All vacuum lines appear to be in good condition with no noticeable leaks. Any ideas?

Look at http://www.transmissioncenter.org/cl...conversion.htm they sell everything you need for a aod swap. After you get a overdrive trans you can change the rear gear to a 3.55 or higher so it takes off faster but still keeps the rpms down at highway speeds.
