Default 260 or 289?

Hi everyone, i have a question that hopefully someone can help me answer. 2 years ago i bought a 1964 1/2 mustang with what i believed was a 260ci,(Fenders say 260, tag on intake manifold says 260, but a few days ago i replaced my valve cover gaskets and on my heads its stamped 289 99. So im beginning to wonder what engine i really have. Will heads from a 289 fit on a 260? I know for sure that it has the 5 bolt bell housing. it has a 2bbl intake and 2bbl carb.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Was gonna say congrats!

But I guess you were hoping for a 260?

Still... you have a beautiful 5 bolt 289...I like em.

You picked up a few ponys.

Do you know what engine your car originally came with? What is the 5th digit in the vin number?

yes it came with a 260. But im still not 100% sure if its a 260 or an early 289.

This site says its a 260 or a 289, a bit confusing.
