Default Header clearance advice.

Ok i have been rebuilding my 302 engine for my 67' stang. It is a stock rebuild but i plan on putting new headers on. I have shopped around cause im on a tight budget and do not wanna spend more than $180 ish. My car is non powersteering and is a 3 speed. I want to know which headers will fit without having to make modifications or if a simple dimple would work. Also shorty headers would be ok too. Any advice would help. Thanks.

You shouldn't have any problems with a small block in a 67 and up mustang..About the only issue would be the power steering ram and you don't have that either..Just make sure the headers are intended for the trans you have and you should be good..I have had good luck with cheapy headers over the years like hedman and black jack...

You are better than me.

I was always changing gaskets when I ran the oval ported hedmans on my rectangle ported heads. Always leaked at rectangle corners.

Hooker Competition long tubes fit the 302 in my 68 perfectly. They are about $200.

Are your exhaust ports enlarged or were you running aftermarket heads?..If not maybe you had a warped flange?

I have World products Windsor Sr heads; ports similar but not exactly the same as a ported stock head.

It is amazing how easy flanges will warp.

I had a set of 3/8" flange headers w/ warped flange. To straighten flange I simply put shims on 3 ports then tightened flange bolts. I could move the flange any where I wanted. If heat is applied to one tube during mod the flange can warp even when bolted to straight edge. When I finish header mods I bolt header to an old head. Heat all 4 tubes to cherry red at the same time to relieve stress.

I wouldn't buy anymore headers unless flange at least 3/8".

Life has been much better since I bit the bullet and bought 3/8" flange ceramic coated stainless steel headers.

Ok so a factory3 speed with a 68' 302. Will hedman 88300's clear or what other ones will because they say on the application charts that the clutch bar would be in the way. I want to know if anyone has istalled these types of headers without problems that have the same type of car.

The hedmans i had were oval port.

wouldnt you rather have rectangle port headers to match?

JBA have rectangle ports and didn't require a lot of modification for 351W application.
