Question Starter Replacement?

Hi, Looking at replacing my starter rather then a shop doing it for me. It looks like it's just two bolts and then it comes off. Looking for some tips / help? Thanks

There are ideas, and there are good ideas. Disconnecting the positive battery cable when you replace the starter, even though the starter's isolated, is a good idea.

O.k. thanks for the help, never would have thought it would be that simple. Now just hoping the bolts don't break off!

Replace your starter with a new one. Most rebuilders cannot be trusted to put out a product that is like new - most are just "repaired".

Have extensions ready and make sure you are very VERY relaxed oh and its not the lightest thing in the world so don't let it fall from the bolt holes onto your hand or anything.

You are absolutely right, but the negative cable should be disconnected, not the positive. If your wrench slips while disconnecting the positive, with the negative still attached, it will arc like mad.

Always disconnect the negative cable first!!!

I will second the need for socket extensions. Getting it out is a lot easier than getting it back in. Patience, patience, patience. If you have headers, then God love ya.

When re-installing make sure you have collar bolts. If someone switched them for normal headed bolts it will make life tough.

In theory it's not a tough job, in reality it can be a lot of fun trying to contort yourself to line bolts back up.
Again if you have normal exhaust manifolds you shouldn't have a tough time, headers make for cramped space with little angle of attack.

Replace it with a newer style "mini" starter. I used one from a 90's 5.0 Cobra(factory high torque) and ran a jumper wire from where the neg batt cable connects to the starter to the solenoid on the starter body(it has a connector to get power through the ignition system on the EFI cars). Been on there for years with hundreds or perhaps thousands of starts, never had an issue with it.
