Default Cold Start

Why is it that if you don't let an inline 6 warm up it runs like crap?

I think I'll have to check out the choke and see if it's actually working. I know my choke tube is all rusted and who knows maybe there's a crack in there.

most carbureted cars need to warm up for a minute before running smoothly. Is your fast idle working? let the fast idle run for a minute then go, also make sure your idle is set correctly, nothing is more annoying then a cold engine with low idle.

It starts up after a few tries when its cold and idles great, once I give her gas it starts chugging. After the car warms up for about 3 or 4 minutes then it runs without any chugging. I really think it must be the choke.

the chugging is from the choke being closed, not enough air gets in to match the amount of gas you pushed so it "chugs". i have the same issue takes a couple tries to turn on then idles great, open up the hood and take off the filter and observe the choke, it should open slowly over the course of approx 5-10 mins idling, less if your driving. also check your air/fuel screws, for my autolite 2100 their on the front of the carb, on an inline 6 you probably have a autolite 1100, there screws with a spring on them, look up how many turns they should be turned out, for mine its 2.5 turns out from tightened.

choke can be a pain to set correctly, either have a load of patience and a detailed guide or take it to be tuned professionally.

Yeah mine takes 2-3 times to start when it's cold.

It shudders for a few minutes if I let it idle, but usually the shuddering goes away if I were to give it some gas.

That may be your problem right there..Not enough heat to turn the choke off quickly enough as the engine gets warm..
