who's running turbo's on their classic stangs?
so my mind has been wandering as it usually does, and i was thinking it would be sick to build a turbo 408 stroker rather than a high compression all motor 408. is anyone running turbos on their classics? i've looked around but haven't seen any kits for them, which leads me to assume id have to fab up all the piping myself. might be kinda hard bc of the tight engine bay my coupe as. if anyone has a boosted stang, feel free to show it off by posting pics and info!
thanks guys

Ha ha,, I think most would say a normally aspirated 408 would be enough in a 67! No??
A few have done a turbo on a 6 cyl, there's lots of room. But a v8 has a tight engine compartment to start with. There's kits for a supercharger, because it easy and all fits on top of the engine.
You might be able to fit a turbo where the battery is but then plumbing the hot exhaust there would be a problem. If you run a large single turbo, then both exhaust banks needs to be "y"ed into a single pipe, that's why most v8s have twin turbos. Ideally, you need the pipes SHORT to reduce lag. You also need to build the engine with LOW compression and forged pistons.

Usually a custom setup, but not too difficult. Get some good shorty headers that'll handle the heat and flip them around backwards. Dump them both into a single turbo up front and run a single exhaust down and out.
That said....a turbo 408 is a LOT of engine and will need a lot of chassis, suspension and transmission to contain it. It's an EASY 800hp engine on pump fuel. You'd want a cage in the car to avoid twisting it up, you'll need a really beefy trans to hold it, and a lot of suspension to put the power down.
Not to mention, that unless you have experience driving very high powered cars, you'll likely end up crashing it. Trying to accelerate that much power in a straight line even, is rather intolerant of improperly set up suspension and unskilled drivers.

yeah it's definitely a lot of power that im not experienced enough to handle...yet haha. i was just curious because i never hear much about a coupe being boosted except for the coupe built by CPR Street Machines. i think im going to stick witha forged 408, a nice set of heads and keep it at 11:1 so i can run pump gas...barely lol
I built up a 68 289 with an AirResearch T06 turbocharger one time, used a waste gate to limit to 6 psi boost. Ran like a 428 CJ. Quiet, though, used a 2.25" 351C single exhaust with a turbo muffler. Good mileage, too.
your gonna get A LOT of mins-information here. You cannot use flipped shorties. Those that say you can, have not done it.Its not hard, but if you do not know how to tune a carb, you will have a hard time getting it to run right.
Your better off looking on http://www.turbomustangs.com . you will get information from people that have done and what you can and cant do.

I've seen people who have flipped shorties on Classic Mustang turbo setups. You just have to find ones that fit, regardless of what year they're from. It's going to depend on your setup though, alternator sits high or low, battery relocation, power steering or not etc etc.
And it doesn't have to be carb'd, though a blow through turbo will have less issues for the same fuel. Blow through + intercooling can run a ton of boost.

im probably just staying all motor 408 at 11:1 compression, built reverse manual valve body c4, and 9inch rear. im building the rear now...currie forged alloy 31 spline axles, ford racing track-lok, strange pro-street 3.70 gears and a strange chromemolly 1350 yolk. the rear is out of a 69 mach 1. should be a fun street car! for rear suspension im thinking of cal-tracs and a set of split mono leafs.
