seals REFUSE to come out...suggestions please!
i had the same problem, Im also from NY, not sure if its us NYers but i wanted to smash the $ h it out of it too and then use a needle nose to pull out the pieces but went online a little and tried heating it up with a little propane heat gun and it shrunk it a little and was able to take it right out with a needle nose.
fink, thanks so much for that photo! so i should pound a flat head between the seal and the part where nothing rides and just pry it out? i was just nervous of damaging the housing wall and not having my new seal sit in properly thats why i didnt do that
That red stuff isn't Locktite is it?
You are just going to need to get mean with that seal but without beating your housing to hell...
If that IS Locktite, you might need to apply some heat to get that seal out... (propane torch will do just fine)

The red stuff is just part of the burned seal. Pound a flat screw driver exactly were the red pointer is, between the seal and the housing. It will bend the seal and you can take it out. Or you can try to heat it, that's a good Idea also. I never have tried that, but there are a lot of things I have never tried. I guess I just never had to.
well, i combined finks method of the flathead with cyprus' method of heat and it came out. it wouldn't come out with needle nose pliers though. i had to head it up and just keep smashing it where i made my first original cut to it. i just hit between the housing wall and the seal like fink said after i headed up the burnt part of the seal (which i guess was making it stick) and finally came out. thanks for all of the help guys i really appreciate it!
Can't figure out why you had so much trouble using the proper seal removal too? If you hook it at the L corner of the seal inside it pry's it out. If it's stubborn you work your way around 90* at a time until it works it's way out:

not too sure jon...only thing i can think of is the 42 yr old seals were being tempermental. ill try the seal puller on the other side, but if not im just gunna use the torch and hammer/flat head haha. when i put the axles back in, i just slide them in and tap them in with a mallot? i noticed the bearings don't exactly slide in easily. am i supposed to put any lubricant around the outside of the bearing?
