Default Consoles custom or otherwise

Hey guys, I have recently been on a quest to make my own console. However, I have no idea where to start. I wanted to make one that is to the stock specs, but do not know where to look. Length, width, height, materials, etc. I am more interested in the dimensions than in the materials. The console will be going in my 70 coupe and I wanted to make it removable, similar to the hump hugger design but more functional. Pics, guides, sage advice are always welcome. Thanks!

Im sure that where theres a will theres a way. I took a console from a 02 and a heat gun and molded/ trimmed it to fit my car. Its not perfect but it serves its function.

Thanks for the pic Booger, I was thinking of going to one from a later car as well. My concern is that since my car is equipped with A/C I am not sure how it will line up with the vents at the bottom. What complications did you run into when you were making yours?

I found the console, stripped it apart and then cut out some of the inner bracing so that i could use a heat gun on the outside of it to warm the joints and the black insert to make it pliable. I bent it to the shape i needed to make it fit better to the dash and then held it while it cooled. It doesnt fit perfectly but is great for only putting in the cost of the plastic paint/ vinyl dye. And it looks pretty nice. I just like having something to put my arm on and a drink holder. Plus it has two cigarette lighters and a fog light switch that i think i will wirr my int. Lights to. The old ashtray is the perfect spot for my radio remote or even my ipodif i decide to take it out of the glove box.

I am in the design/picture collecting stage myself. Booger, that is a very nice job with that console. I have wondered what that would look like and thanks for the write up. I am going to run a 4r70w (possibly with the B&M Hammer shifter) and that might help tie in the newer shifter with my console.

I have considered going with a full custom console, but I do not have the skills for that and would need to have a shop here in town to design one, but this may be the way to go for me. I wonder what that would look like wrapped in ultra leather...

Buckeye, the originals are just fine, but out of my price range. I know that I can pick up a later model console for a fraction of the price and then make it suit my needs, cupholder and arm rest, and still have to flow with my interior. My main goal is to make it removable like the hump hugger system so that if I wanted to keep it original I can just take it out.

Thanks for the comments.. I was in the same boat price wise and i ts working out well. There is a fold out cup holder under the armrest that serves its purpose pretty well.
