Default Speaker Placement, 65 fastback

I searched the forums and couldn't find a thread with quite the information i was looking for. So here it goes on a new one.
In the near future (couple months lol) my 65 should be coming back from paint, in the next week or so i'm in a circumstance where i can get a set of speakers/sub (and amp?) for about half the retail cost. So i'm trying to figure out what i need prior to having the car home. Have any of you installed speakers in your resto-mod fastbacks? I've been trying to figure out where i can put 4 speakers and the sub but without the car home i don't even know where to start.
my instinct says door panels and the interior quarter pieces in the rear seat for the 4 speakers (though id hate to put a hole in said quarter panels)
any ideas?

i'm under the impression stock we had just the speaker in the dash.

Well the fold down seat might make it where you can't put them over the back seat, I'm not 100% sure. You can also buy new kicker panels that come with pre-cut holes for speakers.

damn, web site is undergoing maintenance i'll take a look tomorrow morning. It'd be nice if someone with a first gen fastback would chime in here. the 67 may have been different in terms of speaker placement being that it was a different body style.
I was thinking of maybe doing 4 6.5" speakers all around and of course keeping the existing one in the dash. The sales associate i spoke with recommended a 10" sub, i can claim very little knowledge on sound systems so unless anyone disagrees ill probably end up with just that.
my daily driver doesnt have a working radio, i'm way to excited about having a car with music lol

i'll probably end up going with the flush mount in the quarter panels in the back. I think it'd be the cleanest install of all said options. Regarding the kick panels, heck yeah i just googled these they look perfect for the job.
also thanks for the recommendation on the aftermarket radio designed to fit that opening, that's exactly what i intended to buy. No company makes a stock-looking one that has decent sound quality and four channels?
oh also, i hear a lot of debate over which is better 6"x9" speakers or the 6.5" round ones. You think either side has any real traction or are we all just blowing smoke?

There are kick panels available that are made to accept speakers which will take care of the front two, the rear is a different story. You basically have three options for rear speaker placement.
First, you can mount them in the rear trapdoor that leads to the trunk. This requires butchering the trapdoor and the speakers are kinda sorta close together. Not the best solution.
Second, you can mount them in the quarter panels. Again butchery is involved. Aftermarket quarter panels are expensive. Also in this location the speakers are facing each other which is not the best acoustically. And they have to be flush mounted or you won't be able to fold the seat up and down.
Third you can mount the rear speakers in enclosures that are free and just place them behind or on the back seat. Not a perfect setup but nothing gets butchered. A subwoofer could go in the trapdoor or behind the seat, an amp in the trunk.
Another glitch is the fact that the factory radio opening in early Mustangs is an oddball size, nothing fits it. That's not a problem if you don't mind cutting it up or it's already cut. Stay away from the stereos designed to fit the opening if you're looking for a high quality unit. They are pedestrian at best.
It can all be done neatly, I have 6" speakers in the kick panels up front, 6"x9" speakers in the quarter panels in the rear, an amp in the trunk and a DIN sized head unit in the dash. But it was easy for me, the dash and quarters were already cut when I got the car, I just cut them a little bigger and bought the kick panels for the front.

There may be other ways... Magic or something...Do you really need music? Kidding.

Dang sorry about that, it worked earlier.

Here is a picture of what they look like, and I believe they are for a 6.5" speaker.

There are a lot of opportunities around the rear panel door. Remove it altogether and build a rectangular panel to install with built in speakers.
