Default Some front end resto work

The '67 has been coming along nicely with the engine running smoothly and the interior looking quite sweet. I thought it was time to get under the skin and tidy up some of the rusty spots up front.

I started taking the front fenders off and slowly worked up to taking the complete front end off.



The plan now is to paint up all the components, wire brush the inner guards and apply some chassis saver, fix up a couple of rust holes and then screw the whole thing back together. Here's a couple of photos of the progress so far.

Are you going to plug up the extra holes while you are at it. Its going to look great once everything is done and painted. Just be carefull of the might as well. Good luck

I'm not exactly the world's best welder, but I had a fair amount of practice on my old BMW, so I'm going to have another try at patching up all the unwanted holes. At least the Mustang seems to be constructed of thicker gauge sheet, so the welding will be a little easier.

Yeah, good comment on the "might as wells"! I've been caught by them before. "I'll just give the engine a tidy up".... three months and wads of cash later I've got a high compression race motor.

I have been starting to find out those two holes in the bottom of your shock towers are actually drain holes, mine had them too and it was not caused by rust. They just get filled up with junk after time and cause that area to fill up with soggy dirt causing rust.

I plugged mine up before I realized what they are.

Yes, they are drain holes. Don't weld them shut or else you'll have a puddle of water just sitting there.

Got a bit of work done, but it's tough over Winter with no heater in the garage. Those drain holes are ok. They were a bit rusty, but I just tidied them up and painted. I used ChassisSaver and then added a layer of rustoleum matte black to give it a more original look and to stop the ChassisSaver degrading as the directions suggested.



I wire brushed the rust off wherever I could reach. This was the first pass with the grinder and wire wheel. I used the Dremel and drill on smaller areas. I had to use rust converter on the areas I couldn't reach.



Cut out the rust and made up some plates to fit and welded.



Little touch of bog and some sanding and she was good to go.



I applied the Chassis Saver with a paint brush. It worked surprisingly well. 2 coats as per directions.



After the two coats were completely cured, I gave it a light sand to take the large bumps out and give the paint something to key into. Then I sprayed on two coats of matte black.



I bolted the new mechanicals on and I could move her around. She used to be Ivy Gold, but some idiot painted it white, but only on the outside. I used white on the inner fender. Going back to Ivy will need to wait for a full respray.



The front was pretty good paint wise. Just had to repaint the horns and give the steel a light sand back and new coat of black to match under the fenders. There were plenty of bent fittings under there, so a new hood latch support was needed. It's obvioulsy been in a light front-ender because there was about 1/4" of packer behind the support and the hood latch clashes on the plate without them. Oh well.

Looking good.
What grade sand paper did you scuff your Chassis Saver with?

I may do the same on mine, I've had it on two years now, but I'm getting to the point of front end reassembly and I want to do the final paint over the Chassis Saver before I start to put things back together.
