Default Rear Axel Information

This weekend I plan to pull the drive train, if I get the opportunity. In doing a visiual inspection I noticed that my rear axle seems to be leaking a small amount of fluid. I plan to pull the rear end, redo the seals, gasket and fluid and the clean and repaint it. Maybe not all this weekend but I was wondering if anyone has gone through this process and if there were any cautions they might want to throw out. Thanks.

Phil

not really, just that i used loctite gasket on mine and it never leaked since. ow yeah, and to clean it out i used powerclean or brake cleaner, works great. finish off with a high pressure lube additive and you're laughing.

good luck.

ps, when you pull the drive shaft out, be aware that there will be oil coming out of the tranny. they sell plugs to go in there, but i put a rag in there and taped it up with duck tape, and that 'll hold for a while (not weeks).

I have a 3 speed....will I still have an oil leakage problem? Or is that more of a problem with automatics?

Thanks

If you are only working on the differential, you just need to take the driveshaft off at the yoke on the differential. Why bother taking it off at the tranny? Or, are you planning to pull the tranny also?

The entire drive train is coming out. I'm going to rebuild the tranny, and clean and paint the drive shaft. Again, not this weekend but at some point.

You won't get any leakage with the 3 speed unless the rear yoke seal is damaged.
