Default No spark

Tried to fire up the motor in my 69 after sitting for 15 years. Replaced the cap, points, plugs, coil, battery and still no spark at the distrib. I think it may be the resistor on the firewall as I have about 17 volts on one end and zero on the other.

Any thoughts of what to troubleshoot next?

how are you getting 17 from a 12v system especially with no engine run?

are you getting any volts to the coil?

Well if you have 17 on one side and nothing on the other that does indicate that the resistor is bad, or it might indicate a short on the distributor side of the resistor.

Try eliminating the resistor as an issue by temporarily wiring around it to see if this will fix your spark problem.

Also, double check your point setting.

I assume you got your 17 volts with a charger on the battery turned on the "START" setting?

Electrical is way out of my realm of knowledge. I must be reading my multi meter wrong because I have 26v at my battery....I have it set to the lowest setting on volts (20v I believe).

I have 8 volts at my coil....

Any issues with using the jumper wire on the resistor or should I just go ahead and replace?

Jump the resistor to test it.

But try to put a jumper from your battery to the coil first. See if your coil is good. Or at least the connection to the key on power for the coil.

Ok. Let me start over. After reading the manual on my multimeter, I have 8 volts at the resistor going in and 4 volts at the end going out. I have the same 4 volts at the positive side of the new coil. I stuck my multimeter in the coil plug at the distrib and the same 4 volts. Thoughts?

Doesnt the coil require 12v?

Does the battery have 12 to 11V?

Sounds like you dont have enough juice to the coil. Jump it straight from the battery and try firing it up.

Its easy and quick.

jumper wire directly from the positive of the battery to the positive on the coil? Battery has 12v.

Or, should I bypass the resistor? That would only get me 8v to the coil. Do I need 12v?

Thanks guys.

yes you need 12v to the coil.

well if you want to see if your resistor is bad then jump it. If you want to just make sure it gets started then run a direct wire to the coil.
