Default Carb Suggestions?

I've got a 1973 302 that had a minor oil leak so I decided to rebuild it since I wasn't too happy with the stock 144 hp anyway. So, had it bored .030, blue printed, balanced, and put on a few Edelbrock parts to included: Performer RPM camshaft (Duration is 224 @ 0.50), Performer hydraulic lifters, Performer RPM Intake, Performer RPM aluminum heads, long tube headers, dual exhaust, and the Edelbrock 1406 carburetor. It runs okay but I think I'm significantly shorting myself with the carb. This carb only puts out 600cfm and I was wondering if this was enough? The car will not be a daily driver or raced but I do want to have fun when I get the chance. Was thinking about a Speed Demon 725 or Road Demon 750. Any suggestions? I'm open to any brand or size that will give the car a little more umfff. Goal is around 370 hp without blower or nitrous. Other engine modifications are also welcomed.

how much HP is it making now?

I dont think that carb would hold you back CFM wise...but it may need to be tuned (jets fuel rods/secondary diaphragms springs)

I just went through this myself. Trust me that 600 cfm is more than enough for that engine. I did a similar build and went with a Holley carb, simply because they are easy to modify to run with low vacuum. I spoke to Holley directly and they said that based on my specs they recommended around 500 cfm. They suggested I go with their 570 Street Avenger carb but they said not to run anything bigger than that. Carb size is recommended based simply off of cubic inches and how many RPM's your cam will run. Of course this will also vary slightly if you are running a Std vs my Auto.

I'm running an automatic but had the C4 rebuilt with a torque converter designed for the engine, specifically the cam and expected hp.

Thanks for the heads up on the cfm I'm running now and the opinion on the Demon carbs.

Not sure about the current hp since I can't get it tuned right (may have a bad carb or it simply isn't adjusted correctly) I'm not a carb guy so need to find a local who knows what he's doing.

Mr_Velocity ..... I follow a lot if your posts and appreciate all that you have contributed on other threads; wish I had a quarter of your knowledge. Who is "Bigs"?

Just had a custom 750 built by shaker innovations back east he did a great job!. Bigs and demon would be a great choice as well. Know that demon is no longer owned by BG some of the old workers at BG bought the rights and are producing a way more "quality carb" now!

the new holley ultra HP carbs are great as well. I have gotten away from holley over the past 7-10 years and these new carbs look really impressive just not sure how their QC is nowadays!

bigsperformance.com Many people like him, there are a couple that don't. He'll take a Holley HP carb and set it up for your application, along with other work he does (some people claim he does not) do to the carb. Mine is in the box so I can't personally claim his carbs are "it" but I got a number of recommendations from people that run his stuff. Ed Curtis sent me his way originally.

If you want to run a custom carb then give Patrick a call at pro systems...I got the carb on my 408 from him and it was spot on..Even the jetting was perfect..Most dyno testing I have seen done on healthy 302s always seem to get the best numbers with around a 650 cfm carb..
