Default bell housing wont bolt to block flush

mustang
sorry guys i know i am a torino guy, but my forum is currently down so going to outside help.

i have a 91, 331 and a 71 c4 i am combining. it was a 5 speed before now going to an automatic. when i bolt down the bell housing it always leave a small gap on one either left or right side. don't know what to do. the converter seated right, and lined up with flex plate fine.
also it was a manual before as i said i did not take out the throw out bearing is that the problem. if it is what do i replace it with? its almost like it is wabeling form left to right when i tighten down one side. like something in the middle is putting pressure on it.

Two possible issues that I can think of...

a. the torque converter snub is not seating in the crankshaft recess

b. (more likely) the T/Q is still not seated fully into the transmission. A C-4 TQ will need to "drop" twice. Been there and done that even when I knew better.... just two weeks ago, I had the trans out of a big *** Suburban and..............

I thnk you mean that you didn't take out the pilot bearing in the back of the crank. That has to come out to run an automatic. The torque converter needs to seat in there.

That's the first thing that came to mind, pilot bearing still in crank.

yeah if your pilot bearing is still there thats your problem...pack it pull of grease in the hole and tap a wooden down and it will pop it right out of there

I used a socket extension and toilet paper this past weekend. That works too. Use new toilet paper, no need to cheap out.
