How would they get soot on the back of the car? I've had four or five 65/66 models (a couple that ran poorly and smoked), and never had a bit of soot. The trumpets aim the exhaust down to the pavement.
I was at the gas station the other week, when a GT clone came in. We got to talking about exhaust headers and stuff, and he showed me how he was getting black soot on the valance, and a bit of a rust trail from behind the ring. I noticed that his trumpets were way shorter than what Ford had originally designed (I seem to see this a lot).
I'll tell ya Dan, I don't know. But sure as I'm typing this, he had soot on his valance, and the bottom of the bumper. Maybe it's an aerodynamic thing? Or maybe it's that he has them too short. He said he was going to see if he could find a picture of a stock length setup and try that.
I do know that the original Ford setup is way longer than what I see on the clones around here.
...or something that just came to mind. Maybe he has a leak at the front of the trumpet??? that would make more sense then anything else.
In my opinion, it's a shame for anybosy to SHORTCUT doing something the right way. I'd be VERY leary about this car without the ability to see it in person.
