Default Heater Controls & Window fix

My 65 mustang vert has 3 levers that move up an down for the heater. They are marked Heat, Temp, & Def. Can you tell me how they work? Is off up or down? There is a seperate lever above these 3 that turns on a fan, but I am not sure how these 3 levers are supposed to be used.

Also, the back wing window doesn't match up exactly with the driver window. Is there a way of adjusting this? It leans in slightly.

Thanks.

Off is all the way up for all three of them. The switch at the top slides to the right for the highest fan speed. On edit: These switches are cable operated, and quite often, the ends of the cables get rusted out, so the little s hook snaps off and the cable doesn't work anymore. You have to take out the ash tray and speedo section to get to it to replace the cable if yours is not working.

You might want to track all the cables and see if they're hooked up and functioning. On my 66, and I'm thinking it's the same set-up as the 65s, the defrost lever (the one on the right) cable goes down to a cardboard plenum under the dash. Heat from the heater core gets diverted up to the windshield via a couple of dampers that open/shut within the plenum when you push down on the defrost lever. Anyway, first time I did it, the cable clamp just pulled off the old rotten cardboard plenum, which literally fell apart in my hands when I went to check the problem. I just put on the replacement plenum on Friday; new ones are plastic; pretty easy fix except little screws that hold plenum onto the heater core body are a little tough to get at; use a little socket set. It's 50s at night already in Minn so we were glad to have proper heat/defrost for Friday night cruise. Also, Soaring, you are good! Mustang Forum is invaluable to newbies and semi-mechanicals like myself.

Thanks for the compliment, but all the information I have gathered has been from other sources that I have managed to put to good use over the years. I take absolulely no credit for anything.

Charlie 1,

Where did you get the plastic plenum?

Both Mustangs Unlimited (www.mustangsunlimited.com) and California Mustang (www.calmustang.com) have them. I've ordered stuff from both, but I got the plenum from Cal just because the description was more complete and they had free shipping that day (although I think it still cost me more). One thing, I had to cut away a little insulation/carpet pad to get the plenum to butt up against the firewall and get the right alignment so it would slide onto the the heater core body. Fit was solid, though, and I only put one screw back in to hold it on. goodluck
