Question Outer Mirror Install?

Hi,

My 65 Mustang doesn't have outside mirrors and I want to install a pair. All i see on websites is the mirror, rubber gasket and screws.

I am assuming all I do is mark a location for the mirrors, drill a small hole and then screw in the screws? Is this correct?

It should have had a drivers side mirror the passenger side was option on cars in to the early 90s.I would try to find the holes on the drivers side and reopen them and put the passenger side about the same spot.

Thanks for the info however when I bought my mustang it didn't have any outer mirrors. How many inches back does the mirror start from the door gap.

On my 65 the base is 12 inches from the fender door gap. The glass of the mirror just about lines up with the back of the wing window

The mirror may come with a template. If not position it where you want but either way make sure the vent window clears the mirror before drilling any holes. I personally like to use a sharp awl and a hammer to make the holes, this will mushroom the metal inward and give a more firm foundation for the screw to anchor to. Drilling a hole will work fine but as you tighten the screw it tends to pull the metal outward and if you over tighten then you will have too big of a hole for your screw to get a grip. I hope I explained that well enough.

O.k. I should have my mirrors next week, I will try the 12 inches and see where it lines up. I will use the awl as well as that makes sense to me about the holding of the screw.
Thanks guys and have a great easter!

You're going to have to pull the door panel off as well. After you make the holes, should be two for screws and maybe one bigger one for the remote on the drivers side? Pull the panel and roll the window up. You'll have to get your arm up into the inside of the door and be able to feel for the screw as it comes in from the outside of the door. The screws will come with little thin metal sleeves that screw into. You'll have to manipulate those into place with-in side the door.
