Default HELP !!! My carburator is flooding

I need some emergency help on this one here ...

I reinstalled my 2V carb on my engine today. It has new gaskets etc so everyting should work fine.
The carb is a 2V with an open fuel bowl vent. See picture (attachement).

I cleaned up the carb and tried to start the engine today. What happens ... the fuel comes flooding out thru the vent hole (red arrow on picture).

What could cause this ?

PS: Could something like this be caused/solved by the settings of the Needle valve (idle mixture) cause i didn't try to adjust them yet

Sounds like your float is binding as in stuck at the top. Take it apart and make sure the float isn't rubbing against the sides, and that you have the tab bent so the float cuts off when the bowl is almost full. Also, check the needle to make sure it bottoms out when the float is at the top. The idle mixture screws have nothing to do with it flooding. Once you finally get the float set properly, turn the idle adjustment screws all the way in, then come out about two turns, then tweak it from there. I see why you cleaned it up. That's about the nastiest looking carb I have ever seen.
Now, tonight when you do your nightly reading before going to sleep, instead of reading a good book, read this.

Soaring you are a mustang genius

I opened the carb and checked the tab, and it was loose, fixed it, and when i started it doesn't flood anymore.

BUT [:-]

it now makes an rambling sound, like a whole lot of firecrackers (I think this is the best way to describe it) that go off one at a time.
Is this the fuel / air mixture I need to set ?

I guess its probably a case of hard starting as my manual says.
Just a matter of turning the right screw, right guys ?

Did you adjust the idle adjustment screws as I suggested? If so, and you have some backfiring, you may need to also adjust your timing. Also check the firing order to make sure it is correct.

wow, this all sounds eerily familiar, that's why we replaced our carb.

No i haven't set the idle needles correct yet, i will do this tomorrow. The firing order shoud still be ok since i didn't touch the spark plug cables or distribution.
If i still have the backfiring after the needles have been set correct, is there an easy way to set the timing correctly ? Or is it just a matter of trial and error ?

Btw. how do i set the timing ? I know it has to do something with the distributor but i am a noob to all this so a quick hint would be nice

If your engine is running, but not very well, and you have no carb issues, then simply unscrew the retaining bolt from the bottom of your dizzzy and while the engine is running, move it clockwise until the engine sounds free then back it off a notch. That is about the best explanation I can give you. Maybe others can explain it further. Otherwise, get a timing light, and set it to about 8 degrees BTDC.

I took your advice on turning the needles. I started the engine and it kept on backfiring on me. But the worst thing was that i couldn't get the engine turned of, so i had to pull of the battery cable. I replaced the starting relais because it was broken, but now when i start the engine all i here is the starting motor ... the engine does not crank anymore.

Any advise ?
