Default Possible starter problem?

Hey all. I've finally found myself with some time to fix up my Mustang II Cobra after what I believe to be the starter quit me while driving. It makes a fairly high pitched whirring sound when you turn the key, and it will not start. From looking around online I've found a couple different possibilities, and as I expected, mostly to do with the starter. People have suggested a malfunctioning relay, teeth ground up on the bendix drive/flywheel, or just plain and simple something wrong with the starter motor. I'd really like a second opinion from someone here, if anyone has the time!

Battery isn't up to par if that could cause it, but I didn't figure that awful likely. Always did the job before and it hasn't degraded any from where it was.

Hi,
Best advice ...."Pull" the starter. However my best guess, is that "fairly high pitched whirring sound " could be the Bendix drive is not engaging. Remove the starter and have your friendly local auto parts store check it. Good luck!

or just check it yourself:
Apply 12 v from a set of jumper cables and look for the Bendix to fly outward. If it does, the Bendix is probably worn out. (new starter or Bendix depending on the price point). if it doesn't same conclusion( new starter)
