Hey guys, so ive had tri y's on the car since i bought it a few years back and ive been using them ever since. The longer i have them the more i dont like them. My pitman arm smashes into one when i max out the steering, they heat soak my starter and they melt my clutch cable. I pulled out the whole exhaust system and im going to re do it.

I was thinking about going with shorties but ive been reading up on header selection and it seems like they can actually hinder rather than help especially with the stock (e7) head's exhaust ports.

So what im wondering is should i just go with some 289 hi po manifolds or is there another route that would be better?

the motor is a fairly stock 90 5.0 by the way, with a t5 behind it. i couldnt care less about the sound, im more worried about clearance and functionality

 

My personal choice would be the HiPo cast iron manifolds. I don't visit the 6,000+RPM range much, so those manifolds are bullet proof and trouble free. I would re-visit the choice, however, if I were to build an all-out race motor.

Based on your criteria..+ 1 for Al's comments.
Perhaps, it's a frame dimensional difference, but, I had no problems with TRYs on my junk in regards to steering and heat-soak issues. But, I did know there melting issues when running cable system. This is why I chose the conventional "Z" bar system.

I have the hipo 289 and the look and fit great....got some small performace gains with them going to 2.25in dual pipes, h pipe for correct sound, and dynomax vts to keep the highway noise pleasant.

i run tri-y also have not seen these issues but i agree hi-po are excellent option for a replacement!

i actually think im gonna switch to hipo manifolds when i get some money to make it happen...buy them and port em out for a little more flow

 

you can have mine, but they are a little beat up to say the least

This is what I did with my stock exh. manifolds. I tried to bend a set of used headers to clear my PS, idler arm and AOD trans but couldn't accomplish all 3 so I ported my manifolds until I can afford the correct headers for an AOD with PS.

Not headers but at least they'll flow better than stock and it was something else to mod!
