Do you have disc brakes?
My dad is telling me that i have to get disc brakes before i drive my mustang at all. Hes making me pay for them. Thats not fair because there is no way i can save up for brakes and paint. Thats like 4000 in all i have to put into this car. I want to know if you guys have drum brakes.
I dont have them but im working towards doing the granada swap. The point isnt that they are disc brakes, its that theyre NEW brakes. Ive lost control 3 times in my car, and each time was brake related. 2 times they got wet and I had to lock the brakes on a wet road, luckily both times there was nobody next to me (I was on Highway 1). The other time my left front failed and I lost pressure through my whole brake system. Again, luckily I was only going 35 and there were no other cars in the way as I had to make a 90 degree turn (screeeeech!). I pulled the E brake (which wasnt helping much), put it into low (automatic tranny) and turned off the engine. I was a little frazled though because I almost fliped into a ditch.
Moral of the story: Dad is right.
Save the paint for last and get new brakes. Luckily for me I didnt hit any other cars or people.
Did I mention I was luckily I didnt hit anyone?

I can`t argue with your father. Suspension and brakes are two of the most important upgrades when it comes to safety. But it all depends on what you want with your car. If it`s a fairly original weekend-cruiser, you can do without the disc-brakes, as long as your drums are in perfect condition. If you plan on a daily driver, I would strongly recommend you listen to your father
As for me, I`ve ordered a front-disc-brake kit from SSBC. (and that was about time, considering I`ve spent in the neighborhood of 9000$ on go-fast-parts last year.) (and yes, parts are more expensive in Norway[

I have power disc brakes. They're nothing like the disc brakes on new cars but they are way better the 4 wheel drums.
I couldn't even imagine driving a car with 4 wheel drums and a single reservoir.
I back your Dad up 100%. Four wheel drums are not the setup for the way kids drive. Maybe your grandpa's way of driving, but not kids.
Ask ol' Dad if he'll do a 50/50 split. My parents let me have anything I wanted .... I just had to come up with 50% cash. Good training on saving that almighty buck...

AT LEAST get a dual reservoir master cylinder. I cant imagine driving without one. But I drive my 67 with a dual cylinder and 4 drums every day. Never had a problem really. They do lock up easier, but Ive never really had a problem driving on wet roads.
I understand that i need disc brakes, but for him to tell me that i need to spend 600 on something that i have to do just doesnt sound right. I wont be driving this thing until my senior year of highschool. We do have a mechanic that found all the parts. Hes gonna give us a price, and if it is good enough then my parents will front me the money. i can get around $300 out of christmas just from relatives. and maybe $300 worth from my parents so that might work out. During the summer i plan on becoming a lifeguard and making $7.00 an hour, which is good for a 16 yo.

Yeah... How dare your father make decisions based on your safety! Only some kinda jerk would care about his son to that degree. I say that parents should ask their kids before they lay down any rules. That way, they'll be cool 'n stuff.
I know, those kind of parents suck.
