71 Fastback resto, need info
Hey guys, Im not new to Ford by any means but I have been doing alot of Pontiac restorations, so I know where to look and what numbers mean what etc on GM vehicles, but on a 71 Ford I am somewhat behind in the number crunching.
I have had this car for 11 years, its been sittin waiting for me to get to it. Now that I am, I want to know what it really is, interior color, original paint code. Its not going to be a chalkmark type or concours resto, more of a restomod that looks like an updated 71. With possibly an AOD, 16" or 17" wheels, and I intend on selling it when I am done.
So how can I find out if its a Mach, or just a sportsroof? How can I find out if its the original 351C 2V in it? I believe it is, its standard bore and the mounts looked like they had never been out. It has an FMX trans that worked good when it was put away, (might keep that.)
Also it has more than the usual rust, but it has it in all the popular locations. I can get sheetmetal for it except I havent found anywhere that has the engine compartment pieces. The ones under the fenders that always rusts out around the shock towers. Does anyone have those pieces? If nobody has them I will probably go with a smoothed firewall and move the igniton and other firewall mounted things inside.
I didnt let it get this bad, it was that bad when I got it from a less than educated individual who tried to build a "race car" out of it.
I have done a 68 Mustang a few years back, a 67 Cougar was my first car and its waiting its turn to look purdy again.
Thanks guys.

Soaring, that is what I need to know. Do I need just the VIN, or the info from the door, or anything else. Also where do I get what the codes are. So far I know its a 71 built in August 70 and the 5836th car built at that plant, and it has a 9" under it instead of the 8" my 72 Stang had.
So where do I go to decoe it my friend?

model year: 1971
built at: Dearborn (Dearborn, MI)
bodystyle: SportsRoof
engine:
consecutive #: 105835
body series: SportsRoof - standard trim group
scheduled assy.:
exterior color: "Dark Green Metallic"
interior trim: Medium Green corinthian vinyl with "ruffino" vinyl inserts
sales office (DSO): Omaha, NE ("NB")
axle ratio: 2.75:1 "conventional"
transmission: "FMX" automatic - Invalid for engine 7
The interior part makes me think of Ricardo Monteblan talkin about the "Rich Corinthian leather" in the Chrysler Cordoba... If anyone else is old enough to remember those commercials.
That is pretty much what I knew already. Anyone know if there was an option for the seats, carpet and door panels to be one color and the plastic moldings, headliner and dash pad to be another? GM didthat in the late 60's and early 70's. Mine is black seats/carpet and med green plastic/headliner.

As far as my experience with 73 Mach 1s go, everything in the interior on the two cars I purchased was all the same. All the plastic, seats carpet, headliner etc was the same color on both cars.
i dont have extreme knowledge in 70 and up model mustangs im more along the lines of 65 to 68, but i know enough to fill you in. as for most mustangs starting in 1965 with the pony interior, and then to 1967 with deluxe interior the recieve "speacial" add ons to add to visual appeal. you show vinal inserts, nothing speacial here, just a name for it. In 1967 the called it deluxe comfortweave, which was part vinal and part clothlike material. as for options in you vehicle, the skys the limit really! 71 came with tach,console/clock in the console,rim-bo sterring wheel, no carpet luxeries, only thick rubber mats from the dealer, i believe only mach 1s came with different door panels,am/fm 8track radio, power windows, rear defroster, power locks, remote mirrors. like i said there are so many options, thats only the ones i can think of right now. if you still dont know your engine now post the 5th digit in the vin and i could tell you, as for your weird color combos, not that i know of, the only year mustang they put different color headliner in mustangs was 1965-6
which only had white, but i think you have a interior color change that ran out of money, i would say that the most worn areas of the interior will be the original. but one quik way to tell is pop a door panel off, itll most like be the cars original interior color
