What Carb, distribitor and Intake?
Hello Gang,
I spent a few hours today on my 66 Fastback. I pulled the carb, intake, valve covers and distribitor. I plan to replace the intake, carb and distribitor. THe 289 2 barrel is ready for the upgrade. I am sure everyone has their favorite choice for what brand product to use so here is the question:
What Carb?
What Intake?
What Distribitor? I know I want to go electronic for the distribitor.
I do not plan on doing any street racing or such, I am just looking for better performance. The existing carb would have to be rebuilt, but I want to go 4 barrell and the existing distribitor is completely stock.
Once I getr it back together, I plan on upgrading the exhaust as wel, any comment on the type here will be appreciated as well.
So let the answer flow.
Thanks Gang,
Gary

Hey, I got a weiand intake manifold, and everyone tells me that it was a good choice. Holley Makes weiand. For the carb i am going to get an edelbrock 600 cfm 4bbl. I would just keep the stock distributor and buy a petronix and flamethrower coil. The petronix will convert your old dizzy from a points system to a pointless electronic system. Oh and for the exhuast im getting some hooker comp. headers and an x pipe. This will allow for better flow.
Hi,
I just finished a 4 barrel upgrade. I got a stock intake and a Autolite 4100 on ebay. It made the upgrade simple. All the vacumes and choke heat risers hooked right up. Ask Pony carbs and they will tell you the Autolite 4100 is the carb to go with. I started my car this weekend and it seems much more responsive with the correct jets. Talk to Pony Carbs. They only do Stang carbs.

Hi,
I missed your post on exhaust. Unless you are going with bigger heads the stock manifolds will work. If you are trying to go hipo then you will need the hipo exhaust. You can find the manifolds at NPD. Be ware there is no heat riser output on the hipo manifolds as you would have a manual choke one the carb.

Im partial to edelbrock intakes. There are two styles of intakes... single plane and double plane. When you look at where the carb is supposed to mount, in asingle plain, it will just be a single opening. On a double plane it will be a 2 tear design. This is designed to mix up the air a bit more. This causes the engine to idle a bit nicer but does restrict flow, in turn hurting performance. You will NEVER see any sort of "race car" with a double plane manifold.
For a carb... Go with one of the big 3... Edelbrock, Demon, Holley
As for the distributer, do for an MSD setup. You will def. notice much better engine performance.

I have heard nothing good about a demon carb. For the most reliable and easy to dial in, go with the Autolite/motorcraft 4100.

I have put 4 Demons on old Fords and 2 chevys. They run great, get good mileage. They do have a little hot start problem but nothing like the Edelbrock. I have since stared using the Street Avenger from Holley. They are great, no hot start problem, great mileage. It is the best carb I have found for driving and mile performance. Holley bought out Weiand, The Edelbrock and Weiand are really close. I would use the perfomer intake, 570 carb and a MSD dist. They have one that is a ready to run setup with out using a box. I also like their coil. With these tree items you can't go wrong.
I went with the Performer Edelbrock intake, Holley 670 Street Avenger Carb and MSD distributer. For the exhaust, I went with Flowmaster Series 40 mufflers and an H-pipe with stainless tips.
I'm well pleased with all.
