Your timing could still be off quite bit. You determined you're on the compression stroke, not necessarily tdc. But from my readings here, I'm guessing you're putting the crank balancer at tdc per the marks and pointer?

While cranking, have someone rotate the distributor in either direction to see if it makes a difference. A timing light also should tell you where you're at.

Yes, I putting the balancer at tdc per the marks and pointer.....I did find out that my "mechanic acqaintance" did not take the carb apart as I found out when I took it apart this afternoon. I did not see any gas coming to the carb from the accelerator pump so I cleaned it all with carb cleaner and seems to working good now...I can't believe people saying they did something when they did not....anyhow I am at a loss again.

Found it...ignition had bare wire grounded out.....fix and started up....
