Default Ignition cylinder

So the girlfriend was pulling in the 65 fastback about a week ago while I was inside working on our remodel and she has in her hand the ignitioin key cylinder still attached to the key. She says "I turned it off and it went past the point to turn the car off and I pulled it out". When I went outside to look at it the "ALT" light and accessories were still on. I tried to put it back in but I couldn't get it. I had to just disconnect the battery so it didn't drain. I have tried a few times since then to get it in but have failed. Anyone have any advise on how to get this back in?

Is there a small hole on the face that will retract the gripping mechanism? If so, stick a straightened paper clip into it.

I just watched a video that was showing that little hole and how it releases it from the switch. I am not at home now but will check it out and post a picture of it when I get home.

Yes sir, thanks to you! Got everything aligned with a paperclip in that small hole and she popped right into place.
