Default steering column removal

trying to remove the steering column in my '67 coupe. there is no rag joint. i got it loose just hanging there, wheel off, and the upper collar loose. the wiring harness seems to be holding me up from getting the upper collar off. from what i have read, i need to remove this and pull the column through the engine compartment. any thoughts?? thanks.

What?

The column should just pull out into the passenger compartment. Once it's all disconnected it should practically fall to the floor on it's own.

the steering box is still attached and seems too big to pull through the firewall hole. not sure how the box disconnects from the column. my shop manual does not cover this. may be i am doing something wrong. i will look again.
thanks.

The early 67 had a one piece non collapsible shaft. It is part of the steering box. Later 67 on on had a flex coupling at the bottom and a collapsible shaft. If yo have the one piece you probably need to drop the box and pull the shaft down into the engine compartment.
If anyone needs a schematic of the turn signal switch here is a pdf

i tried to do that but the section of the column closest to where the steering wheel was is too big to fit through the firewall hole.

Make sure you save the T bolts that hold the bearing cup to the column. They are impossible to replace.
