Default Another Rack and Pinion thread.

I'm looking to get an Rack and Pinion for my 1966 Mustang. There are several out there, and i could use some input from you guys. Experience with the kit itself or with the customer service if something wasn't right or any other comments/suggestions. I've seen the following: Randalls, Unisteer, TCP, Flaming River and RRS.

I have Global West suspention parts, Upper and lower control arms, strut rods and tie rod sleeves. The car is also lowered, 1" GT springs. Besides these suspention parts, i also modified the mounting area for the lower control arms. Now it has the eccentric type like the 67-73 has, so no more shims. Because of these mods, i won't be able to go the TCP due to the fact that it bolts to the lower control arm bolt.

I'm also not sure about the Unisteer kit. I looks like it's mounted just on the 2 bolts from the crossmember. Is that so? And is that even a good construction.

I do like the RRS setup. The way it's mounted to the frame looks really sturdy. Anyone got this installed?

Thanks,

Steffan

I have had the Flaming River rack and tilt steering column in the fastback for over 5 years now and I have no qualms with it. It is light years ahead of the factory slop box and feels akin to having power steering.

I don't do any autocross or the like so my application is strictly street but it works as advertised and installation couldn't have been any easier. I used JBA shorty headers, like they recommended, and everything fit like a glove.

^ yup, if you use long tubes you may have rubbing or worse. Stock manifolds work for sure.

I have the unisteer. No complaints and it has tons of room for clearance.

New to the forum, first post. I have installed flaming river power R&P in my 66 convertible which has been nothing but problems. The car has the patented "Ford Drift' when you drive it that my 86 F150 had. It also shakes pretty good at 35 mph and above. I have checked all the basic things like wheel balance, bent rim, etc. Car is running 15" Magnum 500 wheels and BFG tires. Installer is pointing fingers at flaming river and flaming river is pointing fingers at installer. Does anyone have any ideas what is going on? Now, flaming river says I have to convert to hydraulic clutch to get the correct angles, which makes no sense.

Not sure I'm following...

How does the rack contribute to the shakes?

What kind of suspension are you running?

The rack almost feels like there is a dead spot in it. The drift is much worse when the suspension is under load, which makes me think that the tracking of the suspension is causing the wheels to turn slightly as the suspension loads and unloads. It has the mustang unlimited front suspension (620lbs springs, kyb adjustable shocks, 1 1/8" sway bar, all new. The shaking isn't a vibration like an unbalanced wheel, it is much more subtle. It may not be tied to the rack at all. The drift is the major issue, it just feels so loose and sloppy.

I have seen videos posted up about FR racks have been assembled off center. That is, from the factory they are not correctly aligned so one side is longer than the other so that causes the car to pull.

Funny thing...
I tried to find the videos on youtube and couldn't.

I knew that earlier versions circa 2004 had lots of issues, but thought it was all resolved.
