Default Fuel problem...

ok so everything seems fine with my engine head gasket replacent, engine started for 30 min no knocking no bubbling as I had before...

Just as I was about to switch it off as its 10 pm here and pretty late for the neighbors, it shut off on its own.Went to start and it wouldn't. I am not sure if im out of gas or if gas is not coming to the carb. Tried few times and got nothing. Took off spark number one, dry and doesn't smell of gas. Checked fuel line to carb and it was dry, didn't leak. Tried the crank engine with fuel line off and no gas came out. Isn't gas supposed to come out when cranked?

Yes, when turning over you should be getting gas unless the diaphragm arm of the pump (not the diaphragm) is broken or unless you have a plug somewhere upstream from the pump.

Do you have one of those small in-line clear fuel filters between the pump and the Carb? (like these) http://www.vw-resource.com/images/filters.jpg

How's it look?

My fuel filter is chrome not see through. I guess I'll put some gas in the tank and then try again. I had just changed the fuel line as well but it worked prior to shutting off. Prob it's low on gas. Will update u tomorrow. Thanks. Any other ideas or things to check, let me know..

without cranking the engine, remove the air cleaner and hold open the choke, using a flashlight look down the carb and then open the throttle all the way, you should see the acccelerator pump shoot fuel down the carb, if not then you van be sure that the carb bowl is empty. if no fuel, i would then disable the ignition by removing the power wire to the coil, and then remove the fuel line from the pump to the filter, get a soda bottle or can of some sort to catch the fuel, crank the engine for 15 sec and see if you have any fuel being pumped, you should have around 1/2 to 1 quart. if no fuel, then the pump, pump lobe on the cam sprocket are bad, or the tank is empty.

Thanks, I'll just add fuel to the tank and take it from there. You can usually hear the jets squirting the fuel when opening the throttle while standing over the carb but I dont hear anything. So it's either the pump or I'm empty. Easier to add some fuel tomorrow and take it from there.

Funny that I'm able to change the head gaskets but unable to tell if my tank is empty.

it happened to me once, i bought an old pickup, and the guy i bought it from said dont trust the gas gauge, so i spent the next 2 years refueling at lower and lower levels trying to see how far it was off. finally i came to the conclusion that there was nothing wrong with it. then 6 months after that the truck died at 3/8 of a tank, so naturally i replaced the fuel pump..... still no start. i put in a gallon of fuel....popped right off. did i feel like a dumbass lol
