Default overfilled oil

Changed oil and filter. Refilled with proper amount according to owners manual. Took an hour drive. Let oil settle. Checked and dipstick says too much oil. Looks like about a half quart or so over. Haven't noticed any foaming. Should I drain some to get to proper level?

I wouldn't worry about showing a little over on the dipstick. Especially if you know you added the proper amount.

keep checking. If it get higher you have a water ingress problem, either gasket or block. Has the dipstick been modified? Having too much oil can cause problems with bearings and seals, although 1/2 qt probably is not a problem. If you added 1 qt for the filter, that is probably too much.

Proper amount for which filter?

Is it a v8 or v6? For the V8 there is the PH8A and the PH16 which is about half the height (volume).

It's a 6 cylinder, 200 cu in. Manual calls for 4 1/2 quarts (including filter). I installed a K&N filter # HP-3001. Same size as previous filter. Used same amount of oil to refill as last time. Dipstick hasn't been modified or changed.

If you'd feel better, put a bucket under the engine and loosen the drain plug one turn (don't remove it), and let it sit for 30 min or so and monitor the oil, let it drip until it gets down to the right level.
