Default I6 manual Transmission

I want to replace the transmission in my straight six 65 mustang. Right now there is an automatic transmission in it which works, but it does not work well. The car used to have a 3 speed in it, but it was replaced with an automatic when the second gear went out. I want (probably a four or five speed) manual transmission in it. I also want to keep open the possibility of putting a 289 8 cyl in the mustang one day. Is there a tranny that will work well for both of these engines? I will be keeping the straight six for a while before I switch, so I'd like a tranny that works well for both.
Thanks
