Most people here agree, as do I. My 289 was bored .030 over and that is just right for that engine.... I definately would not go .060. You would get more bang for your buck to get a good 289 block from a junk yard and work that. And personally I would keep a 289 in it (sweet engine) and possibly a 302, but DO NOT put a 5.0 in that thing.
My .02 cents.

Bolts right up. A 5.0 is a 302, GEESE. The only thing you would have to do is change timing covers from your 289, add the fuel pump eccentric and get the correct flywheel which is availble for around $60 bucks. Also a balancer is avail for your 3 bolt crank pulley. It is one of the best things you could do for your car. Better power, more mileage, durable. And once it is done no one will know if it is a 289 or a 302 (5.0)
There were no numbers matching early Mustangs. The 302 will bolt right up, as the block is virtually the same. The main difference is internal. If you can find a 289 that hasn't been bored yet, that would be a little less trouble than a 302, but not much. Either way you go, that block is toast as it has already been bored to .40 over......that is unless you get it sleeved as mentioned. I have always been leary of sleeved engines though. Just my opinion.
OK, here is the update on the latest on the shot 289. I found a complete 302 with only 7K miles on it after an $1800 rebuild. It was built and placed in a 68 that was totalled after a rear end acident. He bought the car back from the insurance company 2 yrs ago and parted out the salvage. HE held on to the engine with plans to put it in another car, but later changed his mind. He did not want to sell it, but was willing to let me take it. He is a friend on mine from Lubbock and is letting it go for $1,100.00. It has an Edelbrock intake and carb, mild cam. He has started it every month to keep it lubed. I have total faith in him as he is a very big mustang guy. You have probably seen one of his car in an article in Mustang Monthly and other auto mags. It has been published 8 times in various car mags. It is the only one Ford ever produced - It's Pink! Yes I said pink. He also owns a couple Pace cars and one is signed by Mr. Shelby himsself.
I plan to pick it up this weekend.
