Hello gang,

I'd like to replace my shifter but I'm having a hard time identifying it. I have a 351w engine and a four speed tranny -- toploader I'm pretty sure of.

The pic below is where the shifter arm attaches to the trans. Have any of you came across one like this? How do I find an angled replacement....the current one is straight. The three bolts pictured are the only ones.

I have never seen a toploader with a shifter like that...which makes me think maybe you have an overdrive 4 speed from the 70's...that's just my guess as Im not familiar with those.

 

No idea, but that would be my first guess as well. Definitely doesn't look like a factory toploader shifter

 

Here is a pic of a '60s automotive Toploader:





The shifter bolted to the left side of the tailhousing with two bolts. Many shifters other than Ford Factory were available. Some preferred Hurst. I kept my original that came with my '65 "K" car.


Believe your pic is of another trans used in trucks, with a shifter attached through the top of the gearbox. The car transmission was derived from the truck transmission. imp

Looks like someone put a Ford SROD, single rail overdrive transmission in Used in Mustangs from 1979 to early 83.4 Speed fully sychro with UN-synchronize reverse. Also used in F series trucks but not thought of as a good high HP unit. Built for the Fox body with 140 hp.

 

Definitely an SROD 4 SPEED

 

That is definitely an SROD Transmission they're very light duty although I had one behind a 429 with 500 horsepower I never had a problem.
