Default Shifter kits

Can some of you smart guys tell me how a shifter kit works? (Yeah, Tyler, you can chime in too. ) I have never had an auto Mustang, so was just wondering what it does that is better than the regular auto tranny. My brother (bless his soul) bought an 02 Camaro Z28 and I drove it last summer. I took it out to a lonely road and punched it. Neither was I impressed with the power of it, but the dang thing wouldn't shift unless I let off the gas. It just kept climbing with RPM, and when I hit 7K, I let off on it for fear of blowing the engine. It is a Chebby automatic, but I presume the shifter kits work the same on all trannies. 'Preciate it.

There are different kinds. Like the one that camaro had on it probably gave manual shift control. I know they change the pressure and direction of the tranny fluid(which makes everything work right). I want to put one on mine, because they make them shift harder. Oh, BTW, They work by changing the springs, and control valve etc.

But, how is that different from just manually shifting it yourself? Say, start off in Low, then when you hit red line, shift it to the next gear, etc. I still don't understand how a shifter kit works.

WEll, You know when you shift it yourself, the car still has control over the gears. I cant explain it, but with a shift kit, you literally must shift it to hit 1st-2nd-3rd. NOt like with a regular one which still shifts itself.

Well, I have owned a few autos in my life. Ford, Chevy, Toyoya, etc. Whenever I had them in low gear, they would not shift until I manually shifted them to a higher gear. How does a shifter kit change that configuration? Or did all the autos I have owned in my aged years already have shifter kits in them? Again, my brother's Z-28 will not shift under full power while in D (drive) position. Maybe he has a screwed up tranny?

My understanding is they change the line pressure to the transmission making them shift quicker and harder. The one I put in my old Z28 also changed the mech. govener to raise the shift point. Unless you opt for a full manual shift they should shift in drive under full throttle

Yeah, What he said, But Im talking about out of low, the trans shifts by itself, but i think with a certain type of shift kit, you must shift it into the 2nd and 3rd gears.

umm....id say the tranny might be messed up because in a shift kit you can bein regular automatic....then u can switch into the shift kit of you wanna shift.

a shift kit is basically an option to switch your tranny into a manual without a clutch.
