Default MAACO

ok guys, I know your all probably gonna flinch just by the mere mention of there name, but here's the deal. I live in Atlanta and I recently went around and got some estimates on painting my car. First a little background. Its a 66 coupe in real good condition, virtually no rust except some on the bottom of the doors, typical. Shes very stright only a few minor I mean you really have to look too to see them. I have taken all interior out and all chrome off of the car, hood and trunk lid off all weatherstripping etc. The car is down to nothing but body and engine. I recently completed detailing the engine and all components individually and reassembled, I detailed the compartment and all of the underside of the car including fender wells etc. I did all this first so as not to do damage to a new paint job. My question is this the original paint was covered probably 10 years ago by a paint job its not bad and I'm thinking it could be used as a base. I would like to repaint it the original color. I went to numerous shops and all of them gave me estimates of around $3500, then I went to MAACO and they gave me an estimate of around $1000 to $1500 doing the same work as the others. Now ya'll tell me whats the deal. I mean they can't be that bad or am I missing something here. I'm leaning on going with them. I'm just trying to make the car look better not some concourse show car, although shows, parades and nice weekends are all that car will ever do. Anyway, your thoughts are all appreciated.

White space is your friend!

Seriously... Macco jobs are at best a temporary solution to a paint job on your classic. They are typically low quality - tons of orange peel and overspray, no real craftsmanship in the job at all. Your current paint job will be fine as a basecoat on a Macco finish. If you want something nice, $3500 is reasonable.

Remember - you get what you pay for.

We all know that the cost of a paint job is mainly in the preparation phase, and not the final color coat. If you were skilled in preparing the body for the color coat, then MACCO will give you a paint job that will last a few years, and possibly save your body for that period of time. But, the quality of their work is horrible, and they are in the business to make car lot cars look better for the unsuspecting used car buyer who doesn't have a good eye. For a classic Mustang that you plan to be proud of, and brag on, forget MAACO. I paid 5K for my paint job, but that did include some rust body work. Nothing major though. If you want it done right, take it to a Classic Mustang body man. If you only want to get it masked to sell it, take it to MAACO.

my friends 73 mustang was painted by macco, and it looked literally like s@#T. Not only was i brown, but a sparkling brown! Macco had cascading all over the car (for those of you who dont know thats when metalic is layed to heavy in some areas) and the allignment was horrible. They even went as far as to putting a stick to hold a dent up in the 1/4 panel. I thought the funniest though was when they taped off the wheel well, but forgot to take the tape off!!! it peeled half the pain of when it fell off. No save your money and get it done right, i have about 5500 in mine and it is pretty damn near perfect. Remember it all starts with body work though.... good luck!!
