try a torch, keep the flame small enough to only heat the metal and loosen it. otherwise, just cut it off if you are replacing it.

2 1/2 inch pipes, huh? What made you decide on that size?

Then get the 2 1/4 with an X pipe or a Y pipe. Your concern should not be the sound of the exhaust system, but how it breathes. You know damn good and well that the X pipe is superior to the H pipe. You also know my feelings about mufflers. Loud does not equal performance.

In the article that SOring posted it mentioned the 2 1/2 or 3 inch pipe would produce more torque. What isthe best size pipe to go with the 2.25, 2.50 or 3.0?

That depends on your power range. If it is in the 3-4 K range which is what 289's are, then the 2 1/4 pipe is best. It scavanges the exhaust well, but retains just enough back pressure. If you put larger pipes on it, you lose some of the scavenging effect, and will have virtually little back pressure. Now, if your power range is 5-7K, then the 2 1/2 to 3" pipes are best. On those engines, most of them use 3" pipes out of the headers to mufflers, then 2 1/2 out the tail. Bottom line is that bigger is not always better.
