Default auto or manual?

for the most part, a car that intends to be driven deserves a stick. but being that these cars have carbs and not fuel injection, would it make that big of a difference whether it's auto or manual? newer cars are programmed with rev limiters and certain air/fuel ratio's at certain rpms, yadda yadda, but will an older automatic tranny bog the engine down that much? which is better?

i personally prefer a stick, but is it necessary to keep the stick to maintain the power?

It depends on what you want to do with the car. Bracket racing means automatic. No missed shifts, and you can use a a stall and in some cases a transbrake to launch the car just as hard if not harder than a stick.

Low powered vehicles feel faster and usually are with a stick, the main reason most feel faster is its more violent. Once you reach a certain power level, it doesnt make much difference in how fast the car is.

I like them both, and even though I have swapped everything to auto doesnt mean I dont like them. For me the difference is an auto costs me $75-$200 to rebuild, and just a 4 speed starts at $450 for parts, and goes up from there. Soon, the GTO will go back to a 5 speed, and I have beeen toying with the idea of a 5 speed in the Mustang too, even though it came automatic.

good info. my car will be a daily driver. my past 2 cars have both been sticks and really dont mind driving a stick everyday. it can get annoying in traffic, but then again it tends to be less boring to drive a manual. anyone else?

My car was a factory 4-speed car. I recently added a T-5 5-speed and love it. I wouldn't be happy with anything but a stick but that's just my opinion.

I like Auto's for the older cars, it's a cruising car. I love having my arm out the window and the other on the wheel just cruising. But my next car I Want an Manual because of the power handling, I want to feel in control of the car.
So older=Auto
Newer=Man
Sorry I'm all mixed up

i have a manual and an auto. the auto is on my '00 sixer, but my 69er is to be a T-5. I like the control of a manual. i guess depending on the traffic you expect. for those of you with rush hour and never going above like 15mph, auto is probably good. but it's all depending on how you want to drive it

I have manual in both my Mustangs. I don't live in a big city where traffic is heavy though. I suppose if that were the case, I would buy me a beater automatic and save the Stangs for some real driving.

I prefer manual, however my car came with a C6 and I cannot see a reason to put the expense of the manual when the C6 is a great tranny.

Personally I like the 4 speed. I get more of the driving experience with something to do.
Plus, nothing sounds better than a deep exhaust tone going thru the gears. I also have 4 wheel drum brakes and no power steering......always paying attention. It's a blast. Unfortunatly ,my driving came to an end Thanksgiving morning when the sander/salt truck went up my street for 1/2 inch of snow. I won't be cruising till mid April at the earliest......

For fun driving, glad I was lucky enought to get the stick in the mustang, but I would have gone either as long as the rest of the car was straight. My wife couldn't believe I was even looking at mustangs with auto's. Redmach, glad you made it until thanksgiving in new england; mine went away on vet's day here in Minne...64 degrees and sunny on a friday, then freezing rain two days later and salt trucks out.
