porting your own heads?
hey, i plan on rebuilding my engine and boring it out. i am wanting to buy some new heads, but they are expencive, so can port the heads out myself? I was thinking if i got a drummel i could, but it would be a matter of how much to port them. any input is appreacated
thanks
thanks
When I had my 289 rebuilt in the 80's, I had the exhaust side of the iron 302 heads ported, as they were the most constricted side. I found a set of 351 exhaust manifolds (289 HiPo's were not an 800 number away back then), and port matched them to the heads (slightly over actually). If you port your heads, do not wear safety glasses!!! You need full safety goggles. I ended up with over 100 metal shavings in each eye. The eye surgeon used a syringe to pluck out each one. My corneas healed thankfully. Remember - safety first!
