Default Rear End Questions

First off i have an I6 66 Mustang Coupe, I want to put a V8 in it someday and know most of the work involved. However I got an 8 inch rear end with the car and would like to use this to make it 5 all arround (you might of seen in another post i got my disc brake spindles).

I know running the 6 on the 8" probably isn't the most common thing to do, but when i'm going to buy everything to do the brakes, i want to do it once and do it right...

Now, i know there is going to be a difference in the length of the driveshafts from the C4 to the 8" vs. the 7" Luckily the 8 inch still has the rear yoke and about 1 inch of drive shaft in it. how much would i have to cut off the old shaft to make her mate up. I'm guessing 2 inches off to mate with the 1 inch of the other (unless they are different sizes) for a difference on an inch???

Secondly, how much power are the old 8's good for?

Thanks!

i'm dropping a 302 into my 67 i6. i'm almost positive the driveshaft is not strong enough for the v8. when you find an engine, just try to get it's driveshaft along w/ it. i got the engine, tranny and driveshaft off an 85 ford pickup just to be safe.

well ultimately i'm going to change the driveshaft when i get the V8, but since fund are a little tight, and i'll have the 6 in it while i build the V8, i kinda wanted to just lengthen or shorten what i got so i can have 5 lugs all arround and only pay for my rear brakes once...lol

The 8 inchers are good for over 300rwhp, so spend your money on the engine and suspension swap.

Just a few words about dropping a V8 in a i6 MUstang. I did the same swap to a '66 coupe I had back in the early seventies. You need the front spindles, coil springs (heavier) tranny and driveline parts, as well as the rear end. When I did it I swapped everything from a '65 V* car. It requires a lot of parts but people do it all the time.

Well, I have the spindles (versaille), got the springs (have some questions but will save them for another day), got a T5 needing 3rd gear and a tail housing (might be junk not sure yet), got a tip on a motor (302), and i got the rear as we are talking about here. So I'm getting there, but I don't want the car to sit while i get the rest, i want to drive it. So I want to take the 6 tune it up for the short term with the 8 inch rear waiting in the back for an 8 someday. I do have 2 driveshafts and the yoke for the 8", so cutting one to make it fit the C4 and the 8" is really all i need to do. Just need to know the lenght difference. Then for the 40 bucks to change the driveshaft, i save probably 200 bucks not having to do the rear brakes twice

And soaring, suspension I will do, i got the KYB shocks and 1 & 3/4" sway bar kit, as well as global west upper control arms.

also, along with my driveshaft question, the rear is a 280... seems a little tall to me, but should be fine to start out with. what might have this rear orignally came on? 289 2v right? wondering what the HP and torque was

My 66 is 289 2V. and i have those gears. Guess what..... THEY SUCK. MY car 0-60 time is 10 seconds because of those gears. Change them out to 3.25 whenever your ready to do the rear end.

Yeah you ought to, Even though they can still turn the tires over at a red light they still suck.
