ABS sucks, but it's better than goober drivers who are too stupid to back out of the brakes. And yeah, you want the fronts to lock up just before the rears do
ABS works. Abs works fine.I drive in the San Francisco Bay area, and here, I want that other SOB to be able to stop. Educating them is a different matter.

That's why I added that it's better than drivers that don't know how to work their brakes [8D] A year or 2 ago, Renault developed TRUE ABS, using computers and rotational sensors and g sensors and a bunch of other crap, for their Formula 1 cars. Basically the driver just had to mash the pedal down and the computer would apply the brakes to maximum force possible without lockup. But the FIA disallowed it because it was so effective, that it promoted significantly higher speeds in the straights, which they said the safety technology can't currently cope with

That don't do a thing for the SOB's on US101 and I-280 during the commute. They still can't read and don't care.

There are a lot of drivers like that in California. I get rather aggrivated by people that drive 6" off my bumper at 70+mph, knowing that if I have to nail the brakes for some reason, they're not gonna be able to stop

Before ABS Germany's brake law stated that the rears could not lock before the fronts on a straight, flat, dry road.In the early 80's the Krauts even had (Ford had it on the Taurus) an adjustable valve tied to the rear suspension to allow more rear bias when the car was loaded down.

I think you are on the right track.

Yes, ABS works, and it does seem to work fairly well when you need it.

It's the "pedal feel" with ABS that s*cks under some conditions. Brake easy and it isn't really an issue.Plop your foot on the pedal like an angry moose and the ABS doesall the work and it doesn't matter then either. It's thatin-between range of braking intensity that suffers from too much pedal motion. At least that's been my experience in the one car I have that has ABS, and it's been that way straight from the get-goat that (Nissan Maxima 20th Anniversary Edition, so you'd at least expect the mfr to not have shopped for the various mechanical bits in the discount store).

Back to my question about how to tell which end is locked up first...

After some tape measure alignment to get me through until an alignment shop visit early next week, I was able to do several runs on some asphalt. The tires locked up quicker and it was definitely more noticeable which end had locked up.

Thanks for the input.
