Default fuel guage

ive got 68 coupe and the fuel guage doesnt work. Why dont the old stangs have a ground strap from the tank to the frame? i thought this was the problem but i foudna pic and it didnt show a ground strap. The wire runs straight from the sending unit to the guage. Any one know what all is involved with these guages??

Your sending unit is probably bad. They cost about 30 bucks so make sure before you buy something you dont need.

with the key on, pull the wire off of the sending unit. ground it to the frame. If the gauge pegs out (full) then you have a bad sending unit. If it does not peg it is either a bad gauge or bad wiring to the gauge.

If it doesn't peg the gauge, then the gauge is probably bad., or the wiring to the gauge is broken or disconnected. And, I caution you to not ground it to the gas tank. BOOM! Here is a pic of the sending unit on my 65. It should look the same as your 68.
