Actually 1967 was the first year that a GT could be ordered with a 2 barrel. But the things that make them a GT was the front disk brakes (and to note 67 GT's did not have to have disk brakes on the GT) had the dual quad exhausts, the pop open gas cap, and fog lights, for the cosmetics, however the internals were; closer ratio steering box, larger diameter front sway bar and larger spring rate springs. The options for the 68 GT were either a j code 302 4 barrel, 390 2v, 390 4v and very rare 428 CJ (keep in mind they only made 56 Cobra Jet cars, my dad had a 68 conv. 428 car, i know they made 12 of those, coupes they made about 22 and the fastbacks about the same as coupes. Interior options were available to order like a standard Mustang.
not all GT's had a pop off cap or the 15:1 box, I owned a X-Code coupe that had no options other than a C6 and the GT package, it had the 19:1 box (dates for the box were correct) and a twist off cap.
As for the 67 GT, all of them were A, K or S codes, no C codes.

1967 was the only year of the 2 bbl GT (and/or GTA). It's a very well documented fact and easy to verify.
Thanks dan i was ready to get all mad...... No first off its true the 67 was the first and only GT that could be ordered with the stock 289 2v and no disk brakes. As for you 390 2v gt car, if it didnt have the close ratio steering and pop off gas cap and it was a 68, than someone made it into a gt, because all, adn i mean all gt came with closer ratio steering boxes, and to boot, the gt twist off cap you are refering to, came only on 65 gt 66 gt and early early 67 gt. They began making the pop off gas caps in late 67 (4/13/67) And in reality there are only 23 k code 67's out there and of those 23 hipo cars 13 were gt, the reason for that was the 390 was a new offered engine so people wanted it with a longer warrenty than the 289 hipo's 6 month warrenty. For you information
Yeah very few indeed. In my research, and from looking around, i believe the figures i spoke of may be actually half of that, so to see one is a real treat. I have seen a candy apple red gt k code with standard interior, flat hood, hub caps....in turn, no options, but a very good looking rare car. His marti report stated it was 1 of 1 with the hipo engine 4 speed gt and thats it!!
A 68 GT should have a J, S or R codes but there were some X-code cars. Only the 390 and 428 had disc brake mandatory. The 68 GT comes down to this,
Emblems, C-stripes, fog-lights, pop-open gas cap, stiffer springs, dual exhaust with chrome tips, HD shocks, thicker sway bar, styled steel wheels with wide ovals. Due to shortages on the line some things might have been deleted or had substitutions
I think the turn signal hood was also part of the package.
